On 23 August 1989, two million people joined hands to form a 675-kilometer (419-mile) chain, stretching across the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. This peaceful protest was organized to demonstrate solidarity against the Soviet occupation and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.
